ZiMian Wang, Ph.D.

ZiMian Wang obtained his Bachelor of Science degree in biochemistry from the Department of Biology, Nanjing University, China in 1968; Master of Science degree in physiochemistry from Shanghai Institute of Physiology, Chinese Academy of Sciences in 1981; and Ph.D. degree in human nutrition from Wageningen University, The Netherlands in 1997.

Dr. Wang is currently a Research Scientist at St. Luke's-Roosevelt Hospital Center, and at Columbia University, College of Physicians and Surgeons. He is also a Visiting Professor, Shanghai Research Institute of Sports Science, Shanghai, China.

Dr. Wang is an active member of several professional societies including the New York Academy of Sciences; Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology; American Society for Nutritional Sciences; American Society for Clinical Nutrition; and The Obesity Society. He was an active member of Chinese Biochemical Society; Chinese Physiological Society; and China Sports Science Society.

RESEARCH INTERESTS:

Dr. Wang's research interests include the three areas of human body composition studies: body composition models, body composition methodology, and body composition alterations. Currently, Dr. Wang is conducting two research areas:

1. Mechanistic modeling between whole-body resting energy expenditure of body composition at the organ-tissue level and cellular level across mammals and human lifespan;
2. Theoretical explanation of several classical body composition rules such as relatively constant ratio of total body water to fat-free body mass (0.73) and density of fat-free body mass (1.10).
