Jennifer Ann Nasser, Ph.D., R.D.
Jennifer Nasser is a Research Associate and member of the faculty of the New York Obesity Research Center/Department of Medicine, St. Luke's/Roosevelt Hospital Center. She completed NIH Traineeships at the Obesity Research Center and the Division on Substance Abuse, Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons. Her current research focuses on central and peripheral physiological mechanisms that mediate psychological control of human food and drug intake.
Research Accomplishments
Dr. Nasser's research resulted in the first identification of an association between taste perception for a dietary fat component and a genetic sensitivity to bitter taste in humans (Eating Behavior 2001). Recently she published data demonstrating the first association of trait impulsivity with laboratory binge test meal evaluation in obese humans with Binge Eating Disorder (Appetite 2004). In addition she recently developed the first laboratory model system for assessing central hormone mechanisms contributing to "loss of control" over eating in humans exhibiting binge-eating behavior (Appetite 2005). In a recent publication of data from her dissertation research (Obesity Research 2004), Dr. Nasser described an additional potential mechanism for the association of dietary calcium intake and weight loss, a topic of current significance.
Dr. Nasser is also active as a consultant with several US based providers of nutrition services to the elderly, where she provides expertise in the translation of eating behavior science to the clinical promotion of food intake in frail elderly individuals; and she collaborates with mental health researchers in the use of dietary interventions to support recovery from substance dependence and eating disorders.
