Ming Sun, Ph.D


Dr. Sun's research is on the assessment of human physical activity and energy expenditure. He combines latest techniques in electronics/computing with clinical studies, and has contributed substantially to the improvement of indirect calorimetry, especially to the whole-room calorimeter. Recently, he developed a novel device: Intelligent Device for Energy Expenditure and Activity (IDEEA(R)) for quantitative measurements and analysis of physical activity and energy expenditure in free-living (www.MiniSun.com). He is an expert in quantifying and analysis of physical activity and related energy expenditure.

Dr. Sun holds a BS in Electrical Engineering and a MS in Biomedical Engineering. He obtained a Ph.D. in Biomedical Engineering from Vanderbilt University in 1990 after he finished his M.D. course work from Shanghai No.2 Medical University, China. He had been a Research Associate Professor at School of Medicine, Vanderbilt University (1993-2002), received a number of NIH grants, and published extensively. He is at present the President of MiniSun LLC.

Sponsored by a NIH grant, he is currently designing new devices and methods for energy expenditure and physical activity assessment in free-living conditions.
