Dr. Gallagher is an Assistant Professor of Nutritional Medicine in the Department of Medicine and at the Institute of Human Nutrition, Columbia University. Dr. Gallagher is the Director of the Human Body Composition Core Laboratory of the New York Obesity Research Center.
Dympna Gallagher received her undergraduate education in Ireland, and a Doctorate in Education in 1992 from Teachers College, Columbia University. Thereafter, she completed a post-doctoral fellowship at the New York Obesity Research Center at St. Luke's-Roosevelt Hospital Center. Dr. Gallagher has participated in the development of methods for using magnetic resonance imaging to measure high metabolic rate organs in adults (Gallagher et al, 2000) and children (Hsu et al, 2002); described body composition changes in weight stable healthy elderly (Song et al., 2004); and most recently described a novel adipose tissue depot called intermuscular adipose tissue (Gallagher et al, 2005). Three ongoing NIH funded projects involve investigating body composition changes using whole-body MRI in type 2 diabetic adults with weight loss (HL 70298); in children as they advance through puberty (HD 42187); and in morbidly obese before and after bariatric surgery (DK 72507). A fourth ongoing NIH funded study is investigating variations in resting energy expenditure with age and across race groups (DK 42618). Dr. Gallagher has several collaborative studies ongoing in Asian countries (Korea and China) for the purpose of phenotyping Asians in Asia. Dr. Gallagher has wide expertise in the area of body composition methodology.
The Human Body Composition Laboratory is a major Center resource for the study of body composition, energy expenditure, and physical performance. The laboratory has attracted students and visiting Scientists at all levels from around the world. The use of this Core laboratory by scientific associates continues to grow. Laboratory personnel provide consultative advice to investigators on tests that can be performed in this laboratory and interpretation of results. In addition, this Core laboratory has a large training function for students, post-doctoral fellows, and both junior and senior investigators.
