The Alaska-Siberia Project is a cooperative research program between the University of Alaska and the Siberian Branch of the Academy of Medical Sciences in Russia. The program was initiated to investigate the health problems, risk factors and intervention strategies associated with cardiovascular disease and diabetes in Native Alaskan Eskimos and Siberian Eskimo populations. Results from the Alaska-Siberia project indicate that the prevalence of heart disease, diabetes and obesity have increased dramatically in Alaska Natives over the last ten years. Analysis of the genetics of complex disorders in Alaska Natives has been initiated in a collaborative study with scientists at the New York Obesity Research Center and Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons to identify genetic risk factors.
