Allan Geliebter, Ph.D. Allan Geliebter is a research psychologist with an MA in biology and a PhD in Psychology from Columbia University. Currently, he is a Senior Research Scientist in the Department of Psychiatry at Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons. He is also a Professor of Psychology at the Touro Graduate School of Education and Psychology. He is licensed by New York State to practice clinical psychology. RESEARCH INTERESTS AND ACTIVITIES: His research interests include: a) psychological and biological aspects of Binge Eating Disorder (BED) and the Night Eating Syndrome (NES) in overweight and obese individuals, b) brain imaging and binge eating, c) effects of exercise on body composition in the treatment of obesity, d) environmental approaches for obesity intervention, such as price discounts on healthy foods. He has several NIH grants to explore these topics. His current projects include the following: 1) A study in overweight participants comparing those with Binge Eating Disorder (BED) and Night Eating Syndrome to those without the disorders. Various biological and psychological measurements are made before, during, and after weight loss on a liquid formula diet. Changes in weight and body composition are also assessed. 2) A study in obese binge and non binge eaters comparing appetite-related peptide hormones and functional brain imaging (fMRI) responses. 3) A study of stress responses in obese binge and non binge eaters. 4) A study of biological and psychological factors before and after gastric bypass surgery. 5) A study employing PET imaging in obese binge and nonbinge eaters. 6) A study of discount pricing of healthy foods in a local supermarket.
