PROFESSIONAL TRAINING & EXPERIENCE
Postdoctoral Research Fellow, Endocrinology, Diabetes & Nutrition, Columbia University, College of Physicians and Surgeons, St. Luke’s-Roosevelt Hospital, Obesity Research Center, New York, 08/98 07/2000.
At the Obesity Research Center, during the past 2 years, I have been involved in various clinical trials as a part of my postdoctoral training; following is a list of some of these studies:
Pharmaceutical trial “Novo Nordisk”, using euglycemic clamp technique to test a new drug for management of diabetes (25 males);
Study looking at the effect of different types of diet on nutrient utilization and oxidation in a group of lean and obese women (n =30), using the 24 hr calorimeter chamber and body composition.
Study sponsored by “Eli-Lilly” for hormonal replacement therapy, i.e. growth hormone.
Study sponsored by "Pfizer" for comparing two drugs by Bergman’s minimal model intravenous glucose tolerance test in schizophrenic patients.
To identify the difference in nutrient utilization in lean and obese women (n=29) including muscle biopsy for determination of lipoprotein lipase activity (Presented in FASEB 2000, San Diego, April 15-18).
Investigating the role of amylin in gastric motility in obese subjects with and without eating (n=72). (Pilot study)
Calibration of MRI technique for in vivo measuring body composition and organ size in rats (Presented in NAASO 2000, Long Beach, CA October 29-November 2).
My involvement included participation in the generation of hypothesis and preparation of protocols. Moreover, I preformed the screening procedures, data analysis, and compilation of the information and data for National Conference Presentations, and abstracts and manuscript preparation. Also I submitted a research proposal to the NIH in which I am the Principal Investigator. The study is entitled: “Fat turnover and utilization in lean black women”, it has been accepted, but waved for revision.
