Kuan Zhang, Ph.D.
Dr. Kuan Zhang received his Ph.D. from the Graduate School of Arts and Science, Columbia University where he finished his dissertation "The measurement and assessment of human energy expenditure and locomotion" with Professor Richard W. Longman in the Department of Mechanical Engineering. His pre-doctoral training includes a B.A. in Optoelectronic Engineering (Beijing Institute of Technology, Beijing, China), a M.S. and a M.Ph. in Mechanical Engineering (Columbia University). After receiving his Ph.D., he completed a two-year NIH funded post-doctoral fellowship at the Institute of Human Nutrition, Columbia University. Currently Dr. Kuan Zhang is an assistant professor at Columbia University and a Research Associate at the Obesity Research Center, St. Luke's-Roosevelt Hospital Center.
Dr. Kuan Zhang's research interest is in the area of biomechanical measurement and assessment of human physical activity and energy expenditure, including dynamic modeling of human movement, artificial neural networks design, clinical calibration and validation of human movement measurement methodologies, and biomechanical measurement and assessment of both normal and pathological human gaits under free-living conditions. He was one of key persons in building the whole-room calorimeter at St. Luke's-Roosevelt Hospital Center, and has intensively conducted clinical testing, calibration and validation of a state of art device: Intelligent Device for Energy Expenditure and Activity (IDEEA, Minisun, CA) for the determination of the onset, type, duration, and intensity of daily physical activity and energy expenditure. Funded by a NIH grant, he is currently conducting the studies on improving energy cost estimation of physical activity, and gait analysis under free-living conditions using engineering techniques.
