BCU Services

The Human Physical Performance Laboratory contains the following:
  • Anthropometry (Body circumferences using Glulick II tension-calibrated tape measure); Bone breadth assessment; Skinfolds via Durnin & Womersley (1974) using Lang Skinfold Calipers (Cambridge Scientific Industries, Inc.) or Harpenden Skinfold Calipers
  • Air-displacement Plethysmography with predicted or measured thoracic gas volume (BodPod®, Life Measurements Inc.; PeaPod®, Life Measurements Inc.)
  • Bioimpedance Analysis (Whole-body single-frequency analysis using BCA Body Composition Analyzer Model 680; Bodystat Body Composition Monitoring Unit Model 1500; Omron Body Fat Analyzer HBF-300; Omron Body Fat Analyzer HBF-306; Tanita TBF-310; Tanita TBF-305A); Segmental single-frequency and multi-frequency analysis (Tanita BC-418; Tanita MC-190; Tanita WS5-2; Xitron 4000B Bio-Impedance Analyzer; Solartron SI-1260 Impedance/Gain-Phase Analyzer)
  • Dilution Techniques for Total Body Water using Deuterium isotope analysis (by infrared-spectrophotometer); Extracellular Fluid using Sodium Bromide Dilution (by HPLC). Equipment includes FT-IR Spectrometer (Nicolet model Avatar 360) , HPLC system (Perkin Elmer sys-5200), two freezers (Fisher Scientific Model 326F, and model lab-1), two refrigerators (Lab-line Instrumentation model Frigid-Cab, and Fisher Fd), Lyophilization system (special customer designed), Electronic Analytical Mettler balance, IEC model PRC-6 refrigerated centrifuge, Bench-top centrifuge (Jouan model A-14)
  • Dual Energy-Ray absorptiometry DXA (GE Lunar Prodigy; GE Lunar iDXA; Hologic: Delphi QDR for Whole body: fat, lean, bone mineral; Regional: arms, legs, and trunk soft tissue and bone; Regional: abdominal region of interest; Regional: femur-hip, spine, wrist done) 
  • Hydrodensitometry (Under Water Weighing) with spirometry (Collins Cybermedic Classic TLi Total Lung Analyzer) for measurements of lung volumes and capacities (Helium-dilution method for measurement of functional residual capacity)
  • 3-Dimensional Photonic Scanning
  • Quantitative Magnetic Resonance (EchoMRITM) for measurement of whole-body fat, lean, and water
  • 40K whole Body counting 
  • Indirect calorimetry for measurement of resting energy expenditure; food thermogenesis assessment; submaximal and maximal VO2 assessment. Equipment includes TrueOne® 2400 Metabolic Measurement System, Parvo Medics Inc TrueOne® 2400 integrated metabolic measurement system for cardiopulmonary stress testing, indirect calorimetry, and maximal O2 consumption measurement.
The Human Physical Performance Laboratory contains the following:
  • Strength assessment via dynamometry and one-repetition max tests (Takei Digital Hand Grip Dynamometer Model 884150; Lafayette Hand Dynamometer Model 78010; Takei Back-Leg Dynamometer TKK-5002)
  • Apollo 4 Multi-station Gym
  • Fitness assessment via maximal and submaximal tests employing EKG and indirect calorimetry
  • Quinton EKG Monitor Q3000
  • TrueOne® 2400 Metabolic Measurement System, Parvo Medics Inc TrueOne® 2400 integrated metabolic measurement system for cardiopulmonary stress testing, indirect calorimetry, and maximal O2 consumption measurement.
  • Trackmaster Treadmill TMX425C; Quinton Treadmill Medtrack ST; Monark Cycle Ergometer Model 818E
  • Polar Heart Rate monitors
  • Hexagonal dumbbells (8 to 15 lbs)
  • Heavy duty bench for free-weight exercises
