Bariatric fMRI Study

Study Type

Brain activation to food stimuli in adults undergoing diet weight loss and adults undergoing bariatric surgery.

Study Purpose

The purpose of this study is to assess brain activity, genes and hormones, in order to gain a better understanding of biological processes affecting appetite, eating and obesity.

Study Design

Subjects are required to have an initial consult followed by three different scans. The second scan occurs 3 months after the first and the third scan occurs 15 months after the second. Each scan includes a MRI scan as well as a blood draw.

Study Qualifications

  • Age: 18-65
  • Gender: Men and Women
  • Obese (certain BMI range) but otherwise healthy

Study Duration

1 Physical lasting approximately 1 hour; 1 Initial Consult lasting approximately 1 hour; three scans lasting four and a half hours each.

Study Benefits

Up to $800 for participation in all three scans: $200 for each scan, $50 for the initial consult, and $150 bonus for completion.
